Acceptable Use Policies

Many of the places where you can access the Internet, such as schools, colleges or libraries, operate an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) covering access computer equipment and the Internet. Each local authority will probably have an individual AUP policy reflecting the local circumstances. Each person using computers may have to sign a form saying that they accept the policy.

An AUP will normally state that Internet access is monitored using manual and electronic methods, and that records of Internet access are kept. The AUP should also specify the actions and penalties which could result from failure to abide by the rules.

You can find out more about AUPs from the following link: Acceptable Use Policies: A Handbook

Activity

Draw up a checklist of what you think are acceptable and unacceptable uses of the Internet in the place you normally access it.

This would be a good time to complete your logbook for this topic. Does your school or college have an AUP? If so, how does it compare with others you have seen. If not, you could try drawing one up. Check with your tutor to find out exactly what to do.
